About CKA
While working in the United KingdomI discovered that there were gaps in my knowledge when it came to the practical aspects of working effectively. Despite a pretty good education and qualification as a lawyer; I realised I had learnt and been trained to pass exams. The critical skills, soft skills required for working effectively were unfortunately absent in my toolkit.
Hence I lost my job. At about the same time, I got involved in a personal development programme where I discovered the concept of goal setting. Critically, I got introduced to Steven Covey’s 7 habits for highly effective people. The introduction sparked a desire to identify what my core natural giftings were. My enquiry led me to a psychometric assessment book which helped me understand from the results of taking the test contained in the book that my natural core giftings is verbal reasoning; this is the gift that teachers, lawyers, trainers and sales people deploy in their vocation.
At this point in my life I was sure I did not want to practise law as a profession. My new found insight into my natural abilities encouraged me to focus on training so I embarked on a deliberate process of acquiring knowledge and skills that would enable me train people. Considering what I knew of the gaps in the education and training I received from secondary school to university, I realised that there will be people who will be served by my ability to fill in the gaps in their knowledge specifically around the skills that relate to the ability to work effectively.
Once I began practising in the training environment what I quickly noticed was that after a training programme, participants approach me seeking further help on how to practically apply the concepts, principles or knowledge that I had exposed them to. I realised that the skills required to deliver this type of help is different from the skills deployed in training. From my study and researchit was clear the skills I required could be found in coaching.
Interestingly when I set up Tempo Potenza Limited the vehicle through which I delivered my training services to my clients the tagline that I picked for the company was training, coaching and motivation.
This is how I found myself in the exciting field of helping people get a clearer and better understanding of concepts, information and then helping them to translate it into practical application in the work environment. My coaching qualification afforded me the privilege of being able to come alongside people not as a trainer but as a coach to help them clarify their objectives, come up with a plan and support them as they implemented those plans applying the principles of core energy leadership coaching that I had been trained in.
